I spotted this 14’ mahogany board at Seattle Second Use and knew it had a fun future, even if I had no idea what I was going to do with it at the time. The board had some fun ribbon figuring, and much deeper color than most mahogany I typically find. I brought it home, knowing full well I had nowhere to store it.

So it took up residence on my living room floor. Apologies to my roommate.

After kicking it one too many mornings in the dark, I decided it had to go. I went in circles on the design, and eventually landed on an ellipse top with branching legs. Since it’s all cut from the same board, the legs and top are perfectly matched in grain and color. The only bits on the table that are not from the board are joining inserts and four black walnut splines along the edge. There’s a story to those, but let’s just pretend that was part of the design from the start. I like how they look. They’re a reminder that when you screw up, you just gotta do that best you can to patch things up, and put a little polish on it.

Dimensions are 44” x 30”, true ellipse in shape, 18” tall.

If you like the form but mahogany isn’t your jam, let me know, I’d happily build one our of maple, walnut, oak, any anything else that suits your decor. I will not ship this table, however if you are interested in a similar piece being shipped, I think I finally have a plan for that, so let me know.

Table is located in Seattle. Happy to make time to for you swing by if you want to look at it, and also willing to deliver, within reason, you pay for gas (or beer).

  • Lately I’ve been trying to take more pictures and videos as I go. If you’re curious about how any of the process goes, or what you’re seeing in the picture, I’d love to chat about it.
